Southern Trails book lovers will soon be able to celebrate the launch of a West Pearland library scheduled to open in a storefront space in early 2013.
After considering five different lease proposals, the Pearland City Council recently voted to approve a strip mall location on Business Center Drive. Expected to open between January and February 2013, the new library will sit at the northeast corner of the property – which is also home to the HEB Plus grocery store.
Plans for the new 6,000 square-foot library space include a small meeting area for children’s story times, book club meetings, classes and other library activities. Pearland libraries are operated as part of the Brazoria County Library System.
Last May, Brazoria County Commissions voted to partner with Pearland city officials and share the start-up and operating cost needed to open a west side library. For their part, commissioners agreed to provide $550,000 to cover technology and staffing costs among other things. Pearland City Council members signed off on $117,288 for 2013 operating costs and $90,000 to pay for remodeling the space with $20,000 in contingency funding. Going forward, the council approved $190,221 for 2014 operation costs and estimated 2015 operating costs of $204,168.
City officials signed off on a total budget of $550,000 to cover remodeling costs and pay for furniture and books for the new library.
Pearland city officials have been working with Brazoria County Commissions for more than three years on plans for the west side library, which will replace a small library annex for drop-off and pickup services which has been in operation at the Westside Events Center for the past year and a half.
